Learning To Draw

Learning to draw should be fun, not painful! Indeed, throughout the ages and in virtually every inhabited place on the globe, drawing pictures has brought joy to the lives of countless people, be it toddlers, retirees, hobbyists, or professional artists. Drawing pictures is a blast!

So, if you’re presently learning to draw, here are some tips that will help make the process easier and more enjoyable:

1. Learn how to draw negative spaces. Try to observe empty shapes in and around the subject you are trying to draw. These empty spaces can be anywhere -- around the lips or nose on a face, or between the roots of a tree. Take the time to learn how to draw negative spaces so that you can become used to observing them. The task might be difficult at first, but over time, it will get easier.

2. Utilize the ‘thumb and pencil’ approach when measuring the lengths or distances between the objects you are trying to sketch. Try to take as many comparative measurements as you can and create guidelines that will help you accurately position objects and features.

3. Use a grid whenever aiming at precise reference points of a subject. You can draw a transparent or semi-transparent grid composed of 1-inch squares and place your subject behind it. You can also use clear paper or plastic with grid guidelines. Working with accurate reference points can help you create and draw accurate portraits.

4. Once in a while, try to draw objects and images in an upside-down manner. This will help you enhance your observation skills.

5. In order for you to check the accuracy of your drawing, hold your sketch up in front of a mirror. Looking at the reflection of your drawing in a reversed manner may seem odd, but doing this will help reveal errors and inaccuracies.

As you’ll see, learning to draw accurately is a lot fun, and you’ll improve each time you do it. However, if you’d like to accelerate your learning process or develop your skills to a professional level, you should get expert instruction. Here is what we currently recommend: CLICK HERE.
